The Sierra Club was founded by a white supremacist as a “club for middle and upper-class white people” who “screened out” people of color from joining. Their leaders pushed for the forced sterilization of black women and considered Native Americans, like our Seminoles and Miccosukees, “dirty” people.

The Sierra Club’s Executive Director boldly and publicly acknowledged this racist past last year – he was forced to resign last month.

This same Sierra Club targets our communities here in the Glades with relentless attacks on our way of life. Their paid activists drive 150 miles to-and-from the coast to come out here to the Glades, sit in an empty storefront office, and tell us how to live our lives. They attack our farmers, ridicule our values, and devalue our businesses - all while patronizing our communities of color. They seek to divide us – pitting neighbor against neighbor – in an effort to conform our ways to theirs. They make demands that will put our people out of work. Yet they don’t live, work, or worship here.

Sierra Club assumes our Glades communities – made up of mostly ‘black and brown’ people – are so naïve that we will trust those whose very foundation was built on racist lies and white supremacy, and turn on each other.

We’re too smart and too proud for that, right?

racism, white supremacy, glades lives matter, Sierra Club
