The Weekly Clothesline: Were not our hearts burning within us…?

Posted

The story of the Walk to Emmaus… two distraught disciples leaving Jerusalem after Jesus’ death. They are caught up in themselves. They have no room for hope. And as they leave the city, planning to return to their mundane lives before they met Jesus, a “man” appears beside them. They walk and talk together. They are so consumed with their own feelings of abandonment that they don’t recognize the man: it’s Jesus!

The two men speak of Friday’s events and the rumors that a couple of women claim to have seen the resurrected Jesus. Their faith isn’t strong enough for them to stay in the city and see for themselves, so they simply leave Jerusalem.

But what happens next changes everything. This unrecognizable Jesus, apparently in a glorified body, shows up beside them on the road, and he tells them the love story of how their God loves his people so much that he sent prophets to support them. And in the fullness of time…he sent His Son, the Messiah, to complete the plan of salvation.

They stop to eat along the way, and they finally recognize Jesus when he breaks bread with them. When that happens, they say, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us when he was talking to us on the road?”

Take full advantage of this Jesus who walks beside you. He knows your needs before you ask. So why not bring Him into your life where He wants to be? I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

disciples, Jesus
