Reflections from the Pulpit: Happy Labor Day!

I hope that you are having a nice Labor Day Weekend. Tomorrow is the day set aside to honor American Workers. It has been around since 1894 as an official holiday. In much of the U.S. it is the unofficial end of summer but here, summer is nearly at its hottest. Still, I remember a day when school started the day after Labor Day and that really was the end of summer fun. Today, school has been in session for a month already and it has been a difficult start. All of us are tired of masks, but I worry that our failure to mask-up will cost lives. I don’t want to turn this into a political article so I will leave it at that.

Labor Day in Florida is just about the high point for hurricanes. We have been fortunate, but Louisiana has been hit hard as have the states through which the remnants of Ida have gone. We have some months to go and are not out of the woods ourselves. Stay alert and be smart.

It seems like less and less is “Made in America,” but our farming and service industries are still strong. I feel bad that I don’t “smell” Okeechobee like I did for my first year or more. The smell of cattle is a good one and if I try, I can still smell it.

Don’t miss “Labor Day in the Park” tomorrow, sponsored by Main Street. Enjoy your day and give thanks for a wonderful community to work and live in!
