The Community Center building in Buckhead Ridge welcomed 80 people to their monthly meeting. The new Glades County Fire Chief, Lawrence Factor, was there to bring us up to date on the growth of our fire safety planning. He also urged volunteers to step up, especially young people, to be trained as volunteer firefighters.

Lt. Wilson of the Glades County Road Patrol reported 87 citations for speeding and 57 calls for service during January. Buckhead Ridge Commissioner Tim Stanley reported the success of the recent Catfish Festival which earned the association $4,270. He said $1,500 will be allotted to send youth to the Fire College. Another portion will be put into the development of the adjacent park. More volunteers are needed; if you can help, call Tim at 863-532-9891.

Those who live in Buckhead Ridge are asked to call their congresspersons and express their concerns about the high water of the lake. At its current 16 feet, a lot or rain or a hurricane would mean Buckhead Ridge would be flooded. He said the lake was never meant to be a reservoir and that depth does not allow grasses to grow enough to provide food for fish.

Tim also handed out flyers about a community outreach of social services, food distribution and community resources available to this community. He also said a food truck may be coming to the BHR Community Center as a recurring event.

The Buckhead Ridge Community Center is now available to be rented as a venue for any and all types of meetings or events. The huge hall can seat 320 people. Air conditioned, it also has ample tables and chairs, a complete kitchen and even a stage. There is plenty of parking space and sufficient area for outdoor events, also. It even has a play area for children. This venue, with all its perks is probably one of the “best buys” in the Okeechobee/Glades area at only $250. We require a $125 security deposit which the renter can receive back at the event’s conclusion of the event. Contact Vicki Anderson at 863-634-4106 to plan your event.
