OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman lacrosse team played their first game in 2021, a scrimmage  held near the end of the school year.

In that scrimmage, it was clear the girls were still learning the sport. They were going through the process of understanding the rules, feeling the flow of the game, learning how to effectively play defense, pass the ball, etc. It was a lot to take in.

Three years later, the Lady Brahmans who took the field against the St. Cloud Lady Bulldogs on March 21 looked like a completely different team. The girls looked confident and in total control. The years of practice and game time had transformed them into a team that could play aggressive and dominate an opponent. Instead of processing the game they were reacting on instinct, making plays, and having fun competing together as a team.

At halftime the Lady Brahmans were up 6-2 on St. Cloud. They went on to hold off a second half rally by the Lady Bulldogs to secure a 7-6 win. St. Cloud entered the game undefeated, but left Okeechobee with their first loss.

Seniors Shyla English, Madison Collins and sophomore Emma Pereira each scored two goals while senior Lilly Maxwel scored one goal. Junior Rachel Wilson delivered a great performance as goalkeeper for Okeechobee, notching 12 saves to protect the Lady Brahman lead.

The win couldn’t have come on a more fitting night. The Lady Brahmans recognized their seniors before the game. Many of those seniors were freshman during the program’s first scrimmage and sophomores during the team’s inaugural season. They quite literally helped build the lacrosse program at Okeechobee with head coach Aimee Kelly.

Seniors recognized before the game included Lilly Maxwell, Shyla English, Madison Collins, Arianna Granados, Gracie Hutson, Michalyn Salas-Ceja, Marlene Huerta, Estrella Robles, and Mackenzie Ayala.

The Lady Brahmans will next host the Sebastian River Lady Sharks at OHS on April 3 at 6 p.m.
