INDIANTOWN – During a regular council meeting on Aug. 19, Indiantown’s mayor, Janet Hernandez, proclaimed September 2021 Hunger Action Month and Sept. 17, 2021 Hunger Action Day. The proclamation accentuates people across America uniting with the Feeding America Network food banks to combat hunger nationwide, said Hernandez.

The mayor continued that Indiantown had come alongside all 200 Feeding America food banks commemorating and committing to the month of awareness by “volunteering, advocating, donating and helping to spread the word about hunger in our community.”

Hunger is a serious issue in the U.S. The pandemic has escalated the crisis. Out of 13 million children, 1 in 6 may not know where their next meal is coming from, according to the Feeding America website.

Councilmember Anthony Dowling asked the question, “Have you ever been hungry?” as silence filled the council chambers. He concluded that 25% of those under 18, or 1 in 4 children, going to bed hungry every night while urging residents to volunteer with one of the programs fighting hunger.

Hernandez said that the Village of Indiantown committed to working with the Treasure Coast Food Bank in mobilizing and educating people about the importance of food banks, raising awareness and providing for every part of the city.

Aguirre said, “The Treasure Coast food bank is leading the fight against hunger in our community, securing millions of meals.” She explained that partnering with more than “400 local food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other emergency food providers” in the four-county radius supplied meals to those in need.

In addition, Aguirre indicated special events the food bank will be hosting during Sept.; the annual Out Laugh Hunger Show and the first Out-Run Hunger 5k. More information about the events can be found on the food bank website www.stophunger.org/events.
