Big Lake Athlete of the Week: Chauncy Cobb

OKEECHOBEE — This week’s Big Lake Athlete of the Week is Clewiston’s Chauncy Cobb for his performance in the Tigers’ 38-23 victory over Calvary Christian on Sept. 17.

One of the highlights was Cobb’s 60-yard touchdown catch late in the game that stuck a dagger in Calvary Christian’s hopes of a comeback. Cobb faked an in-route then kicked things into another gear, running past the Calvary Christian defensive back. Quarterback Zomarion Harper rolled right out of the pocket towards Cobb, and unleashed a rocket that Cobb caught over his shoulder.

The Calvary Christian defensive back made a diving attempt at a tackle, but Cobb shook off the defender and walked in for a touchdown.

Cobb also had an electric 80-yard run for a touchdown earlier in the game on an end-around. Harper handed the ball off to Cobb, who used his speed to outrun the entire Calvary Christian defense. Linebackers and one of the safeties for the Eagles attempted to cut him off, but by the time they got to where they thought Cobb would be, he was already five yards farther down field. Too fast and too elusive.

Cobb returned a punt for a touchdown as well, nearly 85-yards. After catching the ball on a bounce in the shadow of his own endzone, Cobbs then outran the punt coverage. Watching Cobb run, it’s clear he just has an extra gear that opposing players can’t match. If he gets in open space and it becomes a footrace, you might as well go ahead and add six points to the scoreboard, because he’s gone.

Cobb is part of a Clewiston offense that has plenty of weapons in 2021. Zomarion Harper is one of the better quarterbacks the Tigers have had in recent years, and Johnny Crawford III is an explosive running back that can break a big run at any moment. Wide receiver Kenari Wilcher is another threat for defenders to prepare for. He caught two big slant passes against Calvary Christian that set up touchdown runs for Crawford.
