Angler wins $7,000 in Lake Okeechobee tournament

OKEECHOBEE- The two-day Phoenix Bass Fishing League Super-Tournament presented by Major League Fishing (MLF)  held on Lake Okeechobee concluded on Sept. 19. Tampa’s Christian Greico took home top honors at the tournament with a final bag of 10 fish weighing 44 pounds, earning $7,516.

C. J. Barbosa won in the Strike King Co-Angler division with a final bag of 10 fish weighing 27 pounds and 11 ounces. Barbosa earned $3,701 for his victory.

Greico said he used a 2 oz. Wetted Beaver bait during his time on the lake, while Barbosa said he relied mainly on 3-Blade Spinnerbait.

Don Demott was awarded Biggest Bass at the tournament with a bass weighing 8 pounds, which earned him $1,147.

Coming in second was Austin Schroeder with a final bag of 41 pounds and 6 ounces, while third place went to Nicholas Hoinig with a final bag of 38 pounds and 14 ounces. Schroeder won $3,758 and Hoinig took home $2,504.

Two hometown anglers placed in the top ten at the event. Ron Veale of Okeechobee finished in sixth with a final bag of 37 pounds and 8 ounces, and Kail Stevens of Okeechobee finished in ninth with a final bag of 34 pounds and 9 ounces.

The 2021 MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and Strike King co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six Phoenix Bass Fishing League Regional Championships.

There boaters will compete for a $60,000 prize package, including a new Phoenix 819 Pro bass boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard and $10,000, while Strike King co-anglers will fish for a new Phoenix 819 Pro bass boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard.

The top six finishers in each regional will then qualify for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American.

The 2021 MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Regional for Florida is set for Oct. 21 - 23 on St. Johns River in Palatka.
